ON-LINE REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE FOR INDIVIDUALS.  

The long awaited on-line registration to join USA Wrestling for a wrestler or coach is now working.  This is the first phase of the web-based, online registration process that is now being implemented by USA Wrestling and A-i Group.  This version is available by going to:  https://webpoint.themat.com  then click on "Join USAW Today".  On-line registration requires use of a credit card and involves a surcharge, in addition to the card fee.  Membership registration by clubs, tournament sanctions and club charters still need to be processed directly by the OWA State Office. 

 

NEW ADJUSTMENT MADE TO THE "CLINCH RULE".

This is the new FILA Clinch Rule Adjustment 2004

In order to protect the integrity of wrestling it has become necessary to reconstruct the Clinch philosophy along with the application of the Clinch.

This application is mandatory to guarantee that matches cannot be won or lost through an infraction based on the officiating team. No wrestler should win any match based solely on the misapplication of this rule.

Every effort will be made by the officiating team to achieve this objective.

Application of the Clinch Rule:

Both wrestlers will stand in the center of the one meter circle chest to chest. They will now assume a correct clinch position according to the existing rules.

However, if this cannot be achieved, the official has the obligation to physically move the wrestlers into a fair and correct clinch position.

If this must be repeated a number of times, there is no penalty. The only exception of a penalty will occur if the athlete after repeated physical attempts by the referee openly refuses to clinch properly. This infraction will be penalized as followed: Caution and 2 points for his or her opponent and choice of position. Warnings for any incorrect position in obtaining the clinch are eliminated.

USA Wrestling puts grassroots funding program on hold!

The grant based funding program that the OWA has benefited from during the past two seasons will not be available for the 2004-05 wrestling year.  The grassroots funding structure is being reevaluated to better meet the goals involved in "building the base" of USAW.

The high school and college wrestling seasons are under way.  Get out and support your area high school, college or university wrestling program!

USA Wrestling’s NCEP Copper certification for coaches now available on-line

USA Wrestling and the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), Champaign, Ill., have teamed up to design and offer wrestling coaches a convenient on-line option for enhancing coaching skills and earning Copper Level certification.

Designed for the beginner coach of wrestlers aged 6 to 14, Coaching Youth Wrestling will further your effectiveness as a communicator, tactician, and coach. This course will help you:

* Understand your coaching responsibilities;
* Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and officials
* Create plans for the season and individual practices
* Provide a safe environment and respond to injuries
* Develop training programs to promote lifelong fitness
* Identify the most important coaching points of the major skills and tactics of youth wrestling
* Understand the basic rules of wrestling

After enrolling in the e-course, coaches are sent a key code for accessing the course along with personal copies of the Coaching Youth Wrestling book and video. These resources serve as support material for the course and are valuable references for coaches throughout the season. Plus, built in to the on-line course are such features as the Coaches Clipboard that provide coaching tools to use as early as your next practice!

Those who successfully complete the on-line examination receive a Copper Level certificate from USAW and are entered into ASEP’s National Coaches Registry, a comprehensive listing of certified coaches nationwide.

American Sport Education Program (ASEP) has been developing and delivering coaches education courses since 1981. As the nation’s number-one coaching education program, ASEP works with national, state, and local youth sport organizations to develop educational programs for coaches, officials, administrators, and parents. These programs incorporate ASEP’s philosophy of “athletes first, winning second.” In 1990 ASEP began a partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) to develop and deliver the NFHS Coaches Education Program for high school coaches. Thirty-five states now require NFHS Coaches Education Program courses for their high school coaches, and more than 75 universities use ASEP/NFHS courses and resources. The 2003-2004 OWA tournament schedule is now up, on this website.  Posters will be mailed out to registered clubs in late October.

Important items from the Annual Business Meeting:

Election of Officers: State Chairman - Tony Jones, State Vice-Chairman - John Longfellow (1 yr), Women's Director - Bobo Umemoto, Mat Officials Director - Roy Pittman, Assistant Kids Director - Dustin Biendrieff (1 yr).

By-Law Revisions:

General Bylaws 2.4 - Reword "Kids/Cadets" to "Kids, Cadets".  Also omit "Cadets" in all articles of the Kids By-Laws.  This change establishes the Cadet age group as a separate division.

General Bylaws 2.4, 3.2 and 4.1 - Added "Open Division".

General Bylaws - Add USA Wrestling "Abuse and Harassment Policy" as an addendum to the general bylaws, with the preface that "Club leaders are required to notify the state office of any violations of the policy".

Kids Bylaws 6.2 - Add "with the exception of all OWA sanctioned events that charge an entry fee have a surcharge of $1 per entry to go to the OWA for distribution to divisions".

Kids, Cadets, Cultural Exchange and Junior Bylaws - added an article stating that the Cultural Exchange Division be responsible for the sale of merchandise at all OWA State Tournaments.  The C.E. Division would also secure the proceeds from said sales.
