2005-2006 Oregon Wrestling Association News

2006 OWA Annual Business Meeting.

Held on August 19, at Grants Pass High School

• Meeting was called to order at 10:15 AM.  Coach Jim Zalesky of OSU gave an opening talk.
• 2007 Club Packets were dispersed to club leaders that were present. Other packets will be mail out in early September.
• Cultural exchange report: Team Oregon went to Brazil for the first time in 2006.  Japan will be in state in early 2007 and the 2007 trip will be to Japan.  Team weight classes and weigh-in information was announced.
• State Treasurers report was given. Keith Bassham was re-elected as OWA Treasurer.
• 2006-2007 OWA Tournament Schedule was discussed.
• Chairman's report: OWA numbers have increased in athletes, coaches, chartered clubs and tournaments.  Oregon ranks #8 in the nation for USAW membership.  Andi Thomas was elected as OWA State Vice-Chairman.
• Report on Kids western Regionals was given. Discussion of 2007 OWA Raffle.
• Beach Wrestling report: Divisional by-laws were presented and accepted by the general membership. Dan Erickson was voted in as a one-year member at large and Richard Rockwell as a two-year.  The past year's activities were discussed.
• Coaches Division report: Les Combs was re-elected as division leader.  Number of certified coaches is up. Regional training sites (Thurston, Clackamas and Mt. View) were touted.  Discussion of upcoming OSAA weight certification procedure.
• Special Awards: Wes Hogland Official of the year=Alan Merrill, Youth official of the year=Tyrell Fortune, Most Inproved official=Jim Connelly, Outstanding official at west regionals=Michele Stevenson, USAW Pairing master of the year=Ginger Lile, USAW Lifetime achievement award=Roy Pittman, OWA Rollin Schimmel award=Mike & Karen Noonan.
• Pairings Officials report: There is some change over to computerization, but vertical pairing will still be the norm.  Michele Stevenson upgraded to P1E. Ginger Lile re-elected as division director.
• Recognition of OWA Silver and Gold level clubs. there were the most ever gold level clubs in 2006.
• Senior Division report: Additional weight classes were added at the FILA Junior and University levels. No activity in the division this year.
• Cadet Division report: Both training camp at seaside HS and the National Tournament were productive.  There were 12 national placers and four National Champions.  There will be a cadet folkstyle state tournament on February 24, 2007, at Scappoose HS.  USAW NW Regional qualifers to nationals will be receiving a stipend in 2007. Discussion of ways to eliminate infectious skin problems. Scott Revis was re-elected as Regional Training Coach, Cleve Thompson was re-elected as National Team director.
• Women's Division report: There has been growth in both numbers of competitors and financial support.
• Mat Officials report: Number of officials at West Regionals was outstanding. Paddles are available for tournaments, as are clinics for officials. 
• Junior Division report: Jim Jones and Jeremy Ensrud were voted onto the Junior Council. Jim Zalesky (OSU) was voted as the Camp Director. Amendment to the division amendment process that was voted in at the state FS meet was announced. there was a discussion of dates for the cadet, junior and kids state tournaments. Results of the junior nationals and camp were mentioned. Discussion of a behavioral situation at camp that involved lost air fares remains unresolved.
• Discussion of the 2nd annual OWA Spring Clinic.
• Cadet Director Scott Shannon was in attendance at the National State Leaders Summit and phoned in updates.  A change to the National Tournament schedule at Fargo was the most notable. Other items: Bronze certification is now required at the Junior regional and national level. 285 lbs. is now the upper limit for cadets and juniors. 3/4 nelson now OK for folkstyle competition at all ages. Discussion of background checks on coaches and club personnel.
• Kids Division report: OWA Clubs need to "step up and help out" at West Regionals. Kids State FS/GR will again be at Hermiston in 2007, will rotate to the metro area in 08-09. Stipends for the trip to Fargo will be given out to any Cadets or Juniors that officiate at kids state tournaments. Oregon had a great showing at the Indigenous Games. Oregon Challenge and Oregon Wrestling Classic were discussed.  John Longfellow, Rob Berger and mike Thomas were elected onto the kids counsel.

Oregon Wrestling Club

Who: OWC is a wrestling club designed for all ages and abilities of wrestlers.

When: Mondays and Wednesday from 6-7:30 pm. We will be starting Monday the 20th and be running through the junior national tournament.

2006 Kids Oregon Wrestling Classic is largest ever!

Results from the Annual Meeting of the Oregon Wrestling Association August 14th, 2005.

• John Longfellow, OWA Vice-Chairman called the meeting to order.
• Club packet contents were discussed.
• Keith Bassham gave the OWA State Treasurers report.
• Kids Division report - Rex Metcalfe: Oregon Wrestling Classic, Oregon Collegiate Championships will be at Liberty HS, Kids FS/GR rotates east to Hermiston, Oregon Challenge went well and will be continued, Western Regionals will take place at the Klamath Falls Fairgrounds the next two years, by-law proposal to remove article 6.2 " with the exception of all OWA sanctioned events have a charge of $1 per entry fee to go to the OWA for distribution to divisions". Proposal voted down 8-34, Dustin Bindreiff unanimously re-elected as Assistant Kids Director, Kids Division Counsel elections: Ken Thompson, Ken Enoch, Roy Pittman.
• 2005-2006 OWA Tournament Schedule was discussed.  Club leaders need to follow timelines for confirming tournaments more closely.  There is a need for more local FS/GR tournaments in the state.  There are many open weekends.
• Pairings Division report: Director Ginger Lile was recognized at Fargo with a Lifetime Achievement Award from USA Wrestling.  Number of pairers at regionals and nationals was good, but more pairers are needed within the state.  All clubs should have a registered official.  More Oregon pairers will be needed at Western Regionals next June.  March 5 OWA Clinic at Newberg will have a pairing clinic.
• Womens Division report: Oregon had six champions and two runner-ups at the folkstyle nationals and one national champion at the junior nationals in Fargo.  A DVD has been produced for the purpose of promoting women's wrestling.  The OWA girls are also learning to officiate freestyle wrestling.  Bobo Umemoto was re-elected as division Director and Scott Revis as a division board member.
• NW Coaches Clinic will take place at Centennial HS on November 5, 2005.  Keith Lowrance with Granby System Wrestling will be the clinician.
• Junior Division report: The fargo trip yielded ten All-Americans which is the second greatest number in Oregon history.  Training camp went very well at the University of Oregon.  Jason Chao served as the Head Greco~Roman coach and Scott Kearney was the head coach of Freestyle.  Additional coaching staff included: Steve Lander, Brad McBee, Tony Overstake, Jason Milham, Jayson Wullbrandt and Zac Enoch.  Several versions of by-law amendments regarding divisional voting and amendment policies were presented for first readings during the day.  Team Oregon won this years Concord Cup, in May.  Scott Kearney and Neal Russo were elected to positions on the Junior Council, Chuck Kearney was elected as Training Camp Director and Steve Lander was re-elected as Junior Division director.
• Cultural Exchange division report was quite brief, due to director Scott Revis being absent due to working at a wrestling camp in Hawaii. 
• Cadet Division report: Training camp at Camp Rilea was great. Coaching staff performed extremely well. Fargo All-Americans tallied at ten, including two National Championships by Tyrell Fortune.  Two divisional by-law proposals were voted on.  The renaming of the "Duals Director" to "Developmental Director" passed.  Proposal to combine the Cadet State Tournament with the Kids State Tournament failed.  Scott Shannon was re-elected as Cadet Directot.  Jeremy Ensrud was elected as Development Director.  Nick Hurliman was elected as a council member.
• Mat Officials report: Discussion of ways to recruit FS/GR officials and generate interest in officiating.  In depth clinic will take place on March 5, at the OWA Clinic at Newberg HS.  John Scott was elected as the Mat Officials Director.
• OWA Spring Clinic was discussed.  The event will include clinics for athletes, coaches, mat officials, pairings officials, membership and all other aspects of the OWA.
• Senior Division report: the Oregon Open tournament has settled at Pacific University for an annual local.  Local tournaments need to include senior level wrestlers.  plan on taking a team to the Clansman Open in the fall.  Chuck Kearney was elected as the Senior Division Director.
• OWA general by-law amendment passed to add the Beach Wrestling Division to articles 2.4 and 4.1 and to add Beach Wrestling Director to article 3.2.   Subsequently, Wayne Van Burger was appointed as the initial Beach Wrestling Director and will compose by-laws for the division.
• Coaches Division report - regional Training Clinics will again take place in the spring.  Bronze certification clinics will take place on October 7 at U of O and March 5 at the OWA Spring Clinic.  Reminder that the Copper Certification course is available on-line, through the OWA website, Coaches Division. The division continues to sponsor the NCWA Scholastic Duals.  Jayson Wullbrant was elected as Member-at-Large to the division.
• Chairman's report:  OWA membership was again increased from the previous year.  Goal for 2006 is to get over 6,000 registered members.  The running of the Western Regional Tournament will take a state-wide effort.  Tony Jones was re-elected as State Chairman.
• Good of the Order:  National Team policies and practices were discussed.
