Andy Bowlby wins 2001 Championship Belt
Series on the mens University level, Eric Stevenson, Matt Lindland earn top
ten honors.
USA Wrestling has named the winners of the 2001 Championship Belt Series on the
age-group levels. This exciting system honors America's best wrestlers in each
of the USA Wrestling's four age-groups for their accomplishments during the
year.
The top point scorer in the series on the Cadet, Junior, FILA Junior World,
University and Senior levels receives a handsome plaque.
Athletes only receive points on the specific age level where they compete.
Points can not transfer from one age level to another age level.
University champion - Andy Bowlby of Newberg, Ore.
Andy Bowlby of Newberg, Ore. claimed the University level Championship Belt
Series with 163 points, defeating runner-up Jamill Kelly of Stillwater, Okla. by
40 points. University athletes are 18-24 years old and their class has graduated
high school.
Bowlby won a double title at the University National Championships, claiming
gold medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at 286 pounds. He also claimed a
silver medal at the Pan American Championships. Bowlby is a student at Oregon
State Univ., and competes for the Orange Crush WC.
The Belt Series is based upon a point system, rewarding athletes for actual
success in competition. Athletes who place in the major USA Wrestling events on
the regional, national and international levels scored points in the series.
Each event is weighed according to importance and difficulty, in order to
determine the most successful wrestler during the season. A wrestler also
receives points for receiving the Most Outstanding Wrestler award and Most Falls
award at the events. On the age group levels, points scored in both freestyle
and Greco-Roman are combined for the final standings.
The Belt Series was created in 1990 to recognize Americas most successful
age-group athletes. Among the past age-group Belt Series winners are 2000
Olympic Champion Brandon Slay, 1999 World Champion Stephen Neal, 1998 World
Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Sammie Henson, 2000 Olympic silver
medalist Matt Lindland and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson. Seven
former age-group Championship Belt winners claimed NCAA Div. I individual
titles, as well.

NEW INSURANCE BENEFIT
USA Wrestling Card insurance coverage now applies to all "well organized" wrestling events. This additional coverage now makes it possible for elementary, middle school, high school and college wrestlers to take advantage of additional medical insurance coverage by merely purchasing a USA Wrestling card. No longer is there the requirement that all wrestlers involved in an event have a card for anyone to be covered. This extra insurance benefit is potentially a tremendous edge for wrestling athletes to take advantage of.
To purchase a card, a wrestler can contact their local mat club or the OWA off ice at 541-266-0753 or o.wa@gte.net

Wrestling continues growth on the high school
level according National Federation statistics
Wrestling continues to grown on the high school level, according to statistics
released for the 2000-2001 school year by the National Federation of State High
School Associations (NFHS).
Wrestling grew in every category, with more boys competitors, girls competitors
and teams than the previous season. It was the eighth straight year that the
total number of wrestling competitors and teams has grown nationally, and the
fifth straight year that the number of participants has grown. In addition,
wrestling remains one of the most popular sports for boys, according to the
survey.
Wrestling was ranked No. 6 in the number of boys participants with 244,984 total
participants in the nation. Only football, basketball, outdoor track and field,
baseball and soccer had more boys participants than wrestling.
The number of boys wrestlers on the high school level increased by 5,879 from
the previous year, increase of 2.5 percent.
Wrestling was ranked No. 9 in the number of boys programs, with 9,404 wrestling
teams in the United States. Wrestling was ranked behind basketball, outdoor
track and field, baseball, football, golf, cross country, soccer and tennis in
total number of programs.
The number of boys wrestling teams increased by 358 programs last year, an
increase of 4.0 percent.
Girls wrestling continued its growth trend of recent years as well. According to
the survey, the number of girls in high school wrestling grew to 3,032
participants, up from 2,474 during the 1999-2000 year. This increase of 558
girls participants represents an outstanding 23.0 percent increase.
In addition, the number of wrestling teams with girls participating showed an
increase again. In 1999-2000, 734 high schools had girls involved in wrestling,
but the 2000-2001 year, the total grew to 896 programs. This increase of 162
programs represented an increase of 22.0 percent.
In overall wrestling participants, both boys and girls, the grand total
increased from 241,579 to 248,016 in 2000-2001. This increase of 6,437 athletes
represents an increase of 2.7 percent.
Based on figures from the 51 state high school athletic/activity associations,
participation in all high school athletics during 2000-2001 was 6,657,257, an
increase of 100,345 athletes from the previous year. This sets the all-time
record for high school sports participation, exceeding the previous high set
last year. Total participation increased for both boys and girls during the
year.
The NFHS has compiled the survey since 1971 based on figures from its 51 member
state associations. With the exception of a slight decrease from 1987-88 to
1988-89, participation has risen each year since the 1983-84 year.
In the listing of total athletic participants by state, Texas remains No. 1 with
779,329, followed by California (633,572), New York (334,945), Illinois
(302,354), Michigan (295,799), Ohio (294,848), Pennsylvania (226,419), New
Jersey (218,982), Minnesota (217,270) and Florida (211,648).
The top 10 states for boys wrestling participation were California (24,326),
Illinois (14,367), Ohio (13,468), Michigan (12,064), New York (11,980), New
Jersey (8,853), Minnesota (8,547), Washington (8,517), Pennsylvania (8,338) and
Indiana (8,194). All states, except Arkansas, reported boys wrestling
participants.
A total of 31 states reported girls wrestlers to the NFHS. California had the
highest total, with 752 girls wrestling on the high school level, followed by
Texas with 485, Hawaii with 239, Washington with 256 and Michigan with 153.

NEW WRESTLING MOVIE TO DEBUT!!!!

Something to Chew on
With the start of every high school season, there is always renewed interest in
nutrition. Whether the focus is on dropping to a lower weight or staying strong
through a proper diet, wrestlers always have many questions on what they should
eat.
Judy Nelson, Nutrition Coordinator for the United States Olympic Committee helps
Americas elite athletes achieve success at the highest levels of competition.
USA Wrestlings coaching staff relies on her expertise on a regular basis. Her
suggestions should be high priorities for wrestlers and coaches trying to
establish proper nutrition in a daily diet.
Step one: Switch
to skim
Switching to skim milk can make a dramatic difference in caloric and fat intake
for any individual. In an eight ounce glass of reduced fat 2% milk there is 122
calories with 4.7 grams of fat. In low fat 1% milk, there is 102 calories and
2.5 grams of fat. A wrestler that switches to skim milk takes in 86 calories and
.4 grams of fat per eight ounce glass.
Clearly there is a benefit in switching over to skim milk. An eight ounce glass
is generally smaller than what most people consume in a sitting these days. So,
the benefit can be even further magnified.
Step two: Lots of
fruit
In speaking to Ms Nelson about the importance of fruit in a diet, she sees
benefits varying from fruit to fruit. Bananas are important because of the
potassium they provide; oranges are very important because of the Vitamin C they
provide. Melons are high in Vitamin A and blueberries are also great. So,
when adding fruit to a diet variety can be an important factor to consider.
Step three: Juice over pop
Pop provides nothing of value to for a wrestlers body to run off of. There
are no nutrients to digest. Further, youthful consumers have gotten hooked on
oversized drinks. A wrestler should definitely consider the numbers before they
grab a soda. Eight ounces of pop has about 140 calories. The average pop
serving has increased in size, with many people drinking as much as 24 ounces of
pop in one sitting. Using a caloric intake of 4200 calories a day, 24 ounces of
pop would be 420 calories or nearly 20 percent of the energy intake for the day.
Throw in the fact that it has no nutritional value, coaches and wrestlers should
see that fruit juice is a much better beverage to reach for.
Step four: Baked
Potatoes
Baked potatoes are an easily prepared food that should become a staple in a
wrestlers diet. Dont forget to eat the skin though. According to Nelson,
the baked potato has almost no fat and a minimal amount of sodium with a good
supply of complex carbohydrates.
Of course a wrestlers nutritional training can run afoul if the potato is
loaded down with condiments like butter and sour cream. A wrestling secret in
eating a potato is adding water to the potato. Wrestlers know that baked
potatoes can be dry, so the best thing to do is re-hydrate it. After breaking it
open and smashing it with a fork pour a little more water on it and it wont
taste as dry.
Step five:
Maintain Variety.
Once again Judy Nelsons nutritional point is very simple. No one food has
everything a wrestler needs. Variety in food, even in a specific food group
is important. Dont rely on one food, to supply all of the vitamins and
nutrients needed for day to day health. Remove the junk from the diet, but
maintain variety.
Step six: Lots of
water.
Staying properly hydrated is difficult for the average person. For an active
athlete it can be very hard to stay hydrated without a conscious effort. Nelson
offers that fluid needs can be estimated at 1 milliliter per calorie. So in a
3000 calorie a day diet an individual would need to three liters of fluid.
Generally speaking water is overlooked as an important part of good nutrition.
One old standard is 64 ounces of water consumption a day. Although Nelson states
that this is not very scientific, it is probably well above what most wrestlers
are consuming daily. Clearly wrestlers work hard and perspire significantly so
wrestlers should work to replace the lost fluid. Water replacement is a critical
part of a nutritional plan for a wrestler.
Step seven: The
secret of egg whites
Wrestlers need to understand where hunger pains come from. Foods that are high
in sugar, for example, are broken down quickly after consumption. So, while a
candy bar might taste good, its satisfaction is limited because it is broken
down before other foods that contain higher amounts of protein.
If wrestlers want to maintain a fuller feeling for a longer duration they need
to look to having a diet with good protein. Egg whites are a common source of
quality protein. Additionally, egg whites contain no fat. Throw the yolk away,
thats a whole other topic.
Wrestlers can prepare egg whites easily by boiling up a dozen eggs and storing
them in the refrigerator. Egg whites contain about 3.5 grams of protein each.
Encourage wrestlers to make use of this source of protein.
Step eight: High
fiber is highly important
Again variety is certainly important for wrestlers focusing on proper nutrition.
Fiber is one part of a good daily diet. Judy Nelson encourages wrestlers to make
a high fiber cereal part of their daily food consumption. Cereals like All Bran
and breads can be good sources of fiber. In checking the nutrition panel on
cereal or bread try to find a product that has at least three grams of fiber per
serving. Dont be deceived by the packaging or the name, make sure to check
the nutritional outline.
Step Nine: Dont
rely on meat
Protein is a highly important element for good nutrition for athletes. But a
person does not have to rely only on meat to get good sources of protein. There
are many soy -based products and dairy products that can work just as well as
red meat does for protein. Wrestlers should consider trying legumes such as
black beans and pinto beans as protein sources. Again variety can help in
nutrition and make it easier to maintain a positive outlook when a person
watches what they eat.
Step Ten: Plan for
after the weigh-in
Wrestlers after making weight need to focus on foods that will help recover and
wont adversely effect performance. Foods with fat are definitely slower
digesting. Carbohydrates can be easier on a wrestlers stomach. Foods like
applesauce, crackers, and cereal can be easily digested and aid in recovery.
After making weight dont let a lapse in judgment effect your performance,
plan ahead and shoot for smaller portions spread throughout the tournament day.
Reaching a high level of achievement requires mental focus on all aspects of a
wrestlers performance. Proper nutrition can be an area that can really help a
wrestler attain their goals. Of course being a wrestler, in a junk food culture
will hold anyone back. So, please take the ten simple suggestions to heart. Make
use of the same nutritional training that athletes in the Olympics rely on.
