Gutches v. Burton Olympic Team Wrestle-off in Fargo, N.D.
on July 27
SPECIAL WRESTLE-OFF FOR U.S. OLYMPIC FREESTYLE WRESTLING TEAM BETWEEN LES GUTCHES AND CHARLES BURTON AT 187.25 POUNDS SET FOR THURSDAY, JULY 27 IN FARGO, N.D.
The Special Wrestle-off for a position on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Team at 85 kg (187.25 pounds) between Les Gutches (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Charles Burton (Bloomington, Ind./New York AC) has been scheduled for Thursday, July 27 at the FargoDome on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D.
It will be a best two-out of three series, with the winner qualifying to compete in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. The first session will be at 9:00 a.m., and the second session is set for 3:00 p.m. If a third match is required, it will be conducted during the second session, after the athletes have received a rest period.
This Special Wrestle-off will be held alongside the Asics Tiger Junior National Championships and the AdvoCare Cadet National Championships, the world’s largest wrestling tournament, which will be held in Fargo, N.D. from July 21-29.
Gutches, the 2000 U.S. Nationals freestyle champion at 187.25 pounds, received an extension on his championship series for a position on the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team due to injury. He was injured in training and could not compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling, held at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. Only the 2000 U.S. Nationals champion has the right to request an extension in the championships series to a later site and date because of injury.
Article 4.1 of the 2000 Olympic Trials procedures states the following: "If in any weight class, the 2000 National Champion is unable to compete in the final wrestle-off due to injury or illness, he may request of the appropriate Sports Committee a delay of competition. The Sports Committee shall determine whether or not the delay shall be granted, and, if granted, shall determine the new date and site. The injury or illness must be certified in writing by a medical doctor approved by USAW. USAW approval of medical doctor will not be unreasonably withheld. Request for delay must be made prior to weigh-ins. Delay in wrestle-offs cannot be extended past six weeks prior to the official beginning of the Olympic Games."
Burton earned the right to challenge Gutches by winning the 187.25-pound tournament at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Dallas. He defeated Lee Fullhart (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) in a best-of-three finals series on June 24 to qualify for the Special Wrestle-off.
Gutches is a 1997 World Champion and 1999 World bronze medalist at his weight class. He placed seventh at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. He has won five straight U.S. Nationals titles. He also boasts gold medals at the World Cup, the Pan American Games and the Goodwill Games. Gutches is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. He was a two-time NCAA champion for Oregon State Univ., and is originally from Medford, Ore.
Burton lost to Gutches in the finals of the 2000 U.S. Nationals, and also placed second to Gutches at the 1999 Freestyle World Team Trials. He won a gold medal at the 2000 Takhti Cup in Iran, and a silver medal at the 2000 Dan Kolov Tournament in Bulgaria. He was also third at the 1999 U.S. Nationals. Burton was third in the 1996 NCAA Championships for Boise State Univ., and is originally from Meridian, Idaho.
Extended series are rare at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling. The most recent extended series at the Olympic Wrestling Trials occurred in the 1988 Greco-Roman Olympic Trials series at 180.5 pounds between John Morgan and Jeff Steubing. Morgan, the national champion was injured and received an extension. In the Special Wrestle-off series, Morgan won two matches to one, to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team.

OREGON JUNIOR TEAM WINS CONCORD CUP INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT, MAY 27 & 28.
The following summary provided by team coach Kerry Hageman.
A quick recap of the duals. Six in all and Oregon won all of the them! First up Saturday morning against Germany's KSV Witten 07. Great opener with Oregon winning 41-7. Ty Van Berger, from Marshfield at 44kg, got it started with a fall late in the match (5:27) and the rest of the team responded. Luke Larwin's match, Mountain View 75kg, coming down to criteria after 3-3OT score was by far the best match of the day at that point. Opening with a win for some great first time international experience in very close match was Jesse Pittman of Marshfield, at 100kg, score 4-3. Oregon had California 2 next and again dominated at all weights. This dual was capped off by a fall from Victor Garcia, Marshfield at 125kg to make the final score 42-9. Last dual for Saturday had Oregon wrestling California 3. This was one of the two top rated teams from California wrestling at this tournament. Score here was a little closer but still in Oregon's favor 30-19. Grant's Kevin MIles, at 87kg, executed yet another of his showmanship throws for a quick 40 second fall to seal the victory. That win and Utah's equally solid performance on Saturday setup a great Sunday matchup between the two teams. While still the first dual of the day for each team it was certainly going to put one of them in position to win the championship. Aside from that there was just the aspect of all the great individual matchups. Sean Bolen, Lakeridge at 52kg, set the pace of what was yet to come. He came back with seconds left in the match to decision Spackman 7-6. There followed a Utah, Oregon battle match by match. National Champions, World Team members, it was all there and time and again Oregon was the victor. Ricki Jansma, Marshfield at 56kg and Cam Jones. Match closer than the score but Jones winning by tech fall. Tim Norman, Newberg 60kg, up against Josh Lamano and winning 4-1. A match you could watch over and over and over... Centennials Robert Lynn at 65kg, and Maxwell right down to the wire. Robert getting a great three right at the close to win it 6-3 Eric Stevenson, Jordan Barich and Drew Hageman, all from Newberg, 48kg, 70kg an 81kg respectively, continued their solid performances. Stevenson pinned Waler 50 seconds into the match, having pinned or ten pointed all of his opponents. Barich ten pointed Harris and Hageman, after going down 3-0 to Habibian came back with a five point throw and touch for the fall. Final dual score 33-16. The last two dual for Oregon were up against Claifornia 1 and CYC (Concord Youth Center). While these two teams were a litller less experienced at some of the weights, Oregon maintained their intensity and won both; 41-8 and 33-16. The last dual featured Larwin and Kenny Cook. Even match that earned both a share of Outstanding Wrestler for the heavier weights. Norman deservedly received the honor for the lighter weights. All toll, Oregon had six champions, all of whom were undefeated: Stevenson (fastest fall 0:05) Norman, Lynn, Barich, Hageman & Miles.

HARRISON & BOWLBY MAKE FILA JR GRECO-ROMAN WORLD TEAM!
The FILA Junior age-group was formerly known as the Espoir Division. FILA, the International Governing Body, changed the name of the age-group three years ago. These athletes are between 17 and 20 years old, and include college underclassmen, military athletes and high school wrestling stars who will be competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, the Olympic styles of the sport.
The winner at each weight class of the FILA Junior National Championships/World Team Trials in freestyle and Greco-Roman will qualify to compete on the 2000 U.S. FILA Junior World Team. If an athlete claims titles in both styles, he will be allowed to choose the style in which he wishes to compete in at the World Championships.
The 2000 FILA Junior freestyle and Greco-Roman World Championships will be held in Nantes, France, July 3-9.
